Growing up as a migrant from the island of Jamaica I’ve learned to appreciate my environment. The environment that surrounds us both physically and metaphorically affects the longevity of our society. Knowing that at the moment we only have one planet to call home, motivates me to do all I can to protect it.
I’m currently seeking an Associate’s degree in Environmental Technology at Bronx Community College. In addition, I intend to further pursue a Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering. When people think of the environment, they tend to think of only pollution and conserving natural elements. However, environmental engineering is much bigger than that, it deals with interdisciplinary fields and aims to restructure non-natural elements to properly solve various social issues such as poverty, famine, and widespread diseases.
I care about people and I want to help others because I understand what it’s like to be on the receiving end. I strongly believe in the phrase “no man is an island”, which means our individual success depends on each other. My ability to be open and understanding has proven to be helpful in obtaining various positions; such as internships at Capital One and NYC Department of Environmental Protection agency. My ambitious spirit will aid in my future goals of earning a Doctorate degree and opening a non-profit organization, which caters to providing educational opportunities to those in underdeveloped neighborhoods worldwide. I hope to one day contribute greatly to the communities that raised me.
