My name is Angel and I am a Latino currently living in the Back of the Yards neighborhood located on the South Side of Chicago. Growing up in my neighborhood, I noticed that many classmates resorted to drugs and joined gangs, which prevented them from furthering their education. I hope to become a resource to children and families in need of assistance during difficult situations.
I currently attend Northeastern Illinois University. My goal is to help underprivileged children achieve social and economic mobility and to help break the cycle of poverty and violence in my neighborhood. During my first year in college, I participated in a volunteer program, called Inspired Youth, where I helped students improve their math and reading skills. My experience helped me improve my ability to shape young minds and further inspired me to become a bilingual tutor with a program called GEAR UP. Through my position as a tutor/mentor I have gained leadership skills such as teamwork and the ability to inspire. I am currently exploring careers in social work, family and child services and teaching.
I joined the program America Needs You because, in spite of all the work I do helping others, I had never taken advantage of similar programs myself! I look forward to forming a great relationship with my Mentor Coach and, in turn, learning to be a better mentor myself. Through ANY I plan to build the social and professional skills to achieve my career goals.
