I was born in Jamaica, New York and raised in Williamsbridge in the Bronx. Where I’m from, most people seem discouraged and have given up on pursuing a higher education. Sometimes I can understand their discouragement but I refuse to become a product of my environment. I’m the youngest of seven children and a first-generation college student. I want to make a difference in the world. Though my career choices have changed, my goal to aid and assist my community has not.
I live by the quote, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Living in a place with limited opportunities, I am hungry for success. I’m currently pursuing an associate degree in Liberal Arts at Bronx Community College and am on my way to graduate with honors. I hope to transfer to Cornell University or City College and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Business.
I’ve always been complimented on how much potential I have but never really saw it in myself until I started college. When I discovered America Needs You, it absolutely blew my mind! ANY gives students the opportunity to utilize their education and skills and apply it to their professional and personal development. It took me no time to apply and I was astounded when I found out that I was chosen to become a Fellow. During my time in the 2014 New York Fellows Program, I hope to overcome my weaknesses and transform them into my strengths, make great professional and personal relationships with my peers and Mentor Coaches, and most importantly, give back. I want to return as a Mentor Coach one day because I love and admire what the organization does for us and how it contributes to everything that I believe in.
