Cassandra

I am currently a student at Harold Washington College pursuing a degree in Elementary Education, specializing in Special Education. I am planning to transfer to a four-year University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education. There are three non-profit organizations that have helped me towards achieving my goals. One Goal made me more resourceful. One Million Degrees showed me the importance of networking. Currently, America Needs You is teaching me the importance of planning for my career, and obtaining valuable internship experience.

I became interested in Special Education because of a personal experience. I have a younger sister that is in Special Education because she has a speech impairment. Overtime her speech has improved, and now I can understand her. I learned that one of the teachers that helped my sister was retiring, and it made me upset. I want to help fill the open positions in a field where I can help students with disabilities.

I am confident that my participation in the America Needs You Fellows Program will help me develop the skills I need to be successful in my future career. The staff, Mentor Coaches, and Fellows provide me with a lot of support. Being part of this program has made me feel like I am part of a community that is always willing to lend a helping hand.
