I was born and raised in the Englewood area on the south side of Chicago. I am currently a creative writing major at Harold Washington Community College where I am pursuing an associate degree in fine arts.

I have been interested in creative writing since I was 12 years old. It started as preparation for a standardized school assessment. My peers and I had to write essays, some persuasive while others narrative. That challenged me to think about how to express my thoughts and opinions as opposed to typical reading comprehension. I realized that I enjoyed conveying my thoughts on paper. My passion for creative writing led me to the role of student editor for Harold Washington’s literary magazine.

Additionally, I am part of Urban Alliance which is a program that teaches young people proper work etiquette and help them obtain professional occupations. Through Urban Alliance, I had the opportunity to intern for Northern Trust Bank. I assisted a team with reviewing accounts while improving my ability to work with Sharepoint, Microsoft Excel, and communicate with others in a professional environment. Thanks to Urban Alliance I discovered the America Needs You program.

With the help of America Needs You, I hope to further my professional skills. I am especially excited to join this program in order to take advantage of the networking opportunities and reaching out to any resources that are provided. My future goals are to become a freelance author, write articles for magazines, and to improve my networking skills.
