Born and raised by a single mother in Jamaica, New York, Giovanni the eldest of three first-generation college students. I am currently a sophomore at Queensborough Community College majoring in Liberal Arts. My goal is to transfer to a four-year institution and earn a B.A. in Communications with a minor in Journalism.
After high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where I served for five years as a calibration technician. During my time in the Corps, I developed an interest in journalism. While on deployment, my family would mail me care packages, many of which contained magazines and newspaper clippings. The insightful news and passionate writing that the journalists would provide inspired me to become a writer. After enrolling in college, I decided to follow my newfound passion and I became a contributing writer and editor for the Queensborough Communique, Queensborough Community College’s newspaper. Being involved with the paper has taught me countless lessons about journalism and has further fueled my enthusiasm for writing. I am now prepared, and excited, to sharpen my writing skills through future internship opportunities, while continuing to contribute informative and thought provoking pieces to my school’s newspaper.
America Needs You provides an excellent opportunity for students like me to develop my network, learn from accomplished individuals, like our Mentor Coaches, and to successfully transition from college to professional life. I look forward to pursuing my goals and growing professionally with the ambitious 2014 New York Fellows, Mentor Coaches and the rest of the outstanding ANY staff.
