Living on the Southside of Chicago, I learned very quickly that the best way for me to survive and escape the harsh environment was to be able to relate to the people around me. In high school I was able to help students unite and to find a common voice to address policies that many of us found to be unfair. Overtime I began to develop a voice that spoke on behalf of my community. When I realized the power my voice possessed, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in which I would be able to communicate on a mass scale the thoughts and ideals shared by my community
Currently, I am a student at Harold Washington majoring in Communications. I aspire to become a leading journalist at a nationally syndicated outlet. Furthermore, I want to show youth that grew up like me that society cannot hold them down if they as individuals look to lift each other up. I didn’t join ANY because it might look good on a resume, I didn’t join for the grant money I would receive for being a Fellow. I joined because I know that America Needs You will equip me with the essential tutelage and direction that I need to accomplish my goals. I look to better improve my networking skills, and be provided with the opportunity to meet with industry professionals, which can help me secure an internship in my profession. My name is Isaiah Angress and I am proud to be a Fellow.
