Issalma

I am a first-generation United States citizen. My family immigrated from El Salvador to the United States.  They brought their hard work ethic and determination to find success in the United States.  Because of their determination to succeed, they instilled in me the mindset to work hard for what I want. I currently attend Northeastern Illinois University and I am interested in the healthcare field because I love to help others improve their health.

As a student leader, I understand the importance of networking and social awareness as being one of the major components to building important life skills.  I consider myself a quiet person, so by joining social organizations, it helps bring me out of my comfort zone.  I am currently involved in my many clubs, such as Undocumented Resilient and Organized Club, Freshman Leadership Institute, Student Ambassador and Freshman Navigator.  In addition, I am Secretary and Cultural Awareness Chair for a chapter of Gamma Phi Omega for which I am a sister.  I believe that belonging to these groups helps me become more socially aware and will help build my confidence as a team leader.

America Needs You is a program that I feel will assist me in building my networking and life skills.  I joined this program because they offer many opportunities to meet professionals from several different fields, giving me the chance to gain knowledge and skills to grow not only as a student but to become a highly valued member of society.
