When I was 15 years old, my family and I moved to the United States from Bangladesh. My parents immigrated here with the hope of providing my sisters and me a better life and a better future than they had. Even though my family had no knowledge of the language and culture, their courage in making such an important move gave me the inspiration and motivation to work hard to achieve success.
Everyday I watch my parents struggle to provide my siblings and me a comfortable home. This has taught me that education can lead to a better life and better opportunities. My father always told me, “Knowledge is something that no one can steal from you. The more you gain the better person you become”. This idea has encouraged me to set strong academic, personal and career goals.
I am currently majoring in Biology at City College of New York. Since my childhood, I was interested in science and curious about how things worked. Helping others is my passion and I want to bring a positive change in people’s lives. This has inspired me to pursue a career where I can help develop and bring about new scientific discoveries. Helping others provides me with a unique sense of joy and fulfillment and this feeling motivates me to achieve great accomplishments in the field of medicine and science.
I am grateful to be part of the New York Fellows Program because it provides the professional and networking opportunities I would not have gotten elsewhere. It helps build a strong foundation for success. Thanks to America Needs You, I will have the support of amazing Mentor Coaches, staff members and other Fellows. This opportunity will be invaluable in giving me the guidance and encouragement to reach my goals.
