Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, growing up my parents had clear and strict expectations of me. Over time, I began to adopt high expectations and strong work ethic for myself. They immigrated looking for a better life and promised to have those dreams actualized through me.
Currently, I attend the University of California, Santa Barbara pursuing a degree in Sociology. I plan to attend graduate school upon completion of my degree in order to practice a career in Social Work with a focus on at risk youth. I have seen firsthand the effects of communities who give up on their teens and young adults, failing to see the potential in those individuals. I want to make an impact. I want to demonstrate compassion and mentorship for those who were not given encouragement from the start. Through an internship with UCSB’s Health and Wellness department I learned valuable communication skills. For example: how to create a safe and open space for sensitive and triggering topics as well as the importance of stressing a healthy mental and physical state.
I was fortunate enough to be chosen in the first cohort for the Kayne Scholars Foundation. I have truly reaped the benefits of career development and college knowledge workshops. Partnering with ANY is an exciting step in my future and I am excited to continue to develop as an academic, a person, and a professional in order to make an impact in communities like the one I grew up in!
