Katherine

I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia and came to the United States with my family at the age of 17 for a better future. As new immigrants, it was very difficult for us to accommodate to the new culture and to navigate a new place. However, with the assistance of non-profit organizations, we were able to overcome.  The struggles made me a stronger person and helped me realize the importance of education and being a well-rounded individual.  I have never been more determined to succeed.

I am currently a student at LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) in Long Island City, New York with a concentration in Business Administration.  At LAGCC, I am a part of the Student Government Association and Model Senate SYS Program. My goals are to become a successful businesswoman and to open my own non-profit organization with a mission to help new immigrants and to advocate for students’ and women’s rights.  To achieve my goals, I intend to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Finance.

I am truly grateful to be an America Needs You Fellow.  I believe this program will help me grow professionally, academically, emotionally, and personally. I look forward to working with my Mentor Coach and the ANY staff to accomplish my goals.
