I was ecstatic when I received my acceptance letter to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), because it meant I was going to be moving to the greatest city in the world to follow my dream of working in medicine. UIC is one of the top research institutions in Illinois and having grown up in Rockford, just two hours away, Chicago was a place I had always wanted to move to. Now being a biology major with a pre-medicine concentration, I’m able to study and obtain real work experience in a city I love.
My goal is to graduate with my bachelors in biology and then attend medical school and study to become a physician. In my family, many of us are asthmatic, and growing up with asthma hindered me from participating in all of the sports I wanted to as a child. Due to my experiences with asthma, I have developed a strong passion for helping others that struggle with respiratory issues. I am already on my way there as a certified nursing assistant where I maintain patient stability and comfort by taking vital signs and weight and recording intake and output information. Every day I continue to learn and help people with a variety of conditions.
I am grateful for my education at UIC as well as my job as a certified nursing assistant as they will help me to continue to develop as a person and a professional. The America Needs You Fellowship will further my professional growth as well by providing me with networking opportunities, mentorship, and a safe space to grow not only by myself but with the other Fellows.
