Maria

I believe ambition supersedes all boundaries. My parents left behind their beautiful country, Ecuador, a little over 20 years ago to take forth opportunities of change not offered there. Having done so, they have instilled in me the beauty and necessity of education. I am currently a sophomore at Hunter College pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Biology. I work at a dental office as well as volunteer at the New York Presbyterian-Queens hospital in Flushing. I’ve encountered many patients who each have a story to tell and I yearn to help them be heard.

My goal is to attend dental school in hopes of becoming a dentist. Many people ask, “Why medicine?” and the answer is simple: the learning never stops. The human body is a fascinating mechanism we all possess and all deserve care for. Giving patients the opportunity to receive healthcare benefits despite the financial boundaries imposed on them, as well as providing a beautiful smile that invokes confidence, is in and of itself a satisfying privilege.

I am truly grateful to be a part of ANY and will do all it takes to embody the fundamental skills needed to pursue my goals alongside other highly motivated individuals. Through ANY, I plan on growing as a professional woman and inspiring more first-generation students, like ourselves, to make a difference in our cultures and communities. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me!
