Maryam

I was born on the Caribbean Island of Trinidad. Our culture values and prioritizes family, community and education. A few years later, I moved to the Middle East. In fact, those values and living in a different country have formed and solidified my character because being introduced to a different culture made me more tolerant and appreciative of others.

Now, living in the United States, I wanted to be a part of my local community in Middlesex County. I became the leader of the Youth Division of Communitopia, a non-profit that helps the impoverished and homeless. This position allowed me to congregate with the local youth and perform community service.

I continue embracing my passion for education and helping others by pursuing a degree in Neuroscience, and use that knowledge to help others with neurological issues. I am currently on the pre-med track at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

To pursue my goals, I need to gain the knowledge and skills to participate in internships in my field of interest. With its comprehensive workshops and helpful Mentor Coaches, I know America Needs You will provide the resources I need to pursue my goals. I am grateful to have the privilege of being an America Needs You Fellow!
