Melissa

I am currently a student at Queens College working on a Media Studies major and Journalism minor. I have always loved the art of communication – spreading a message through writing, film, and music. I admire the different ways of getting a message across. I also would love to travel the world and experience different cultures, meet diverse people, try new foods, and document my experiences.

Being of Dominican origin, I was able to travel back and forth and experience all the country has to offer, including the beautiful beaches, the tropical weather, and even the immense poverty that exist on the island. Witnessing first-hand both poverty and the “never give up” spirit has inspired me to one day travel to other countries and immerse myself in other cultures. I want to make an impact in this world, whether it is through an article I write that touches even just one person or perhaps a short film I direct that inspires someone else. I dream of leaving my mark by developing my communication skills, and with America Needs You I think it is all possible.

I am honored to be a part of a program that encourages me to dream big and reassures me that it is all possible with hard work and dedication.
