My life’s journey started in Bangladesh, where I lived until coming to the United States in 1997. I am currently enrolled at Kingsborough Community College and will graduate in June 2015 with an associate degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Biology. I plan to continue my studies at a senior college to pursue my ultimate goal of becoming an internal medicine physician.
To gain the skills needed to achieve my goals, I am involved in several on-campus activities. I serve as the Vice President of scholarship in Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor’s society for two-year colleges. I am also a Presidential Scholar and involved in the Kingsborough honors program, a 50-student program for high-achieving scholars enrolled in honors classes. Finally, I am enrolled in the Accelerated Study in Associate Program (ASAP). In addition to these on-campus activities, I actively volunteer in the Bangladeshi community both in New York, where I assist new immigrants with doctor’s visits, translation and tutoring, and in Bangladesh, where I support an educational nonprofit in my home district.
America Needs You helps first-generation college students achieve their goals. Since I have joined this program, I feel I have gained a support system and now can focus my energy on achieving my goal of attending medical school. Currently, I am seeking opportunities within the healthcare field to help prepare me for my career as a physician.
