I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and came to New York City at the age of sixteen. New York City gave me the opportunity to go beyond my limits and explore other cultures. In high school, I had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program in the Czech Republic and an educational trip to Spain. Both trips gave me an openness to new cultures. To live with a host family abroad was something I had never even considered while living in Santo Domingo.
I currently attend LaGuardia Community College where I am majoring in Communication Studies. I serve as the Vice President of the Student Government Association, which gives me the opportunity to act as a role model and work closely with the student body. My on-campus activities align with my long term goal of pursuing a degree in Educational Psychology. Having seen the effect a high dropout rate has had on my community, I would love to guide young minorities to pursue higher education.
I strongly believe America Needs You will help me to develop my skills and become a stronger leader in my community. As a first-generation college student with a lack of professional and academic support, this program will guide me and help me explore my professional career. Most importantly, it offers me a supportive network that will inspire me for the rest of my life.
