Becoming an accomplished nurse midwife is an example of the American dream for me. I was born and raised in Guyana, and my family and I migrated to the United States in summer 2012. It took a while for me to adapt to the American lifestyle, learning things like how to catch the train, the pronunciation of words, and learning directions didn’t come easy, but it was a great learning experience for me.

I became a student at Queensborough Community College in fall 2014. It was the beginning of an unforgettable and amazing journey. It opened many doors of opportunity for me, like meeting new people from different cultures and the opportunity to participate in the America Needs You Program. It helped me find comfort living in the United States and making new friends.

Being the youngest in a family of five growing up in a small village, having hard work, dedication, and perseverance does pay off. My future desires are to graduate from Queensborough Community College with a nursing degree and continue to pursue my goal of becoming a nurse midwife. Being a part of the America Needs You program and working with a Mentor Coach, I will acquire the tools necessary to make my dream a reality.
