I emigrated with my family from Yemen to the United States when I was two years old. Whenever I put myself in my parents’ shoes, I understand that they want me to not only land a job and start a family, but to also have the educational experience they never had. My parents pushed me to be assertive, organized and goal-oriented by enforcing the importance of education. Growing up in America taught me to become an independent thinker and make my own decisions, such as deciding to be one of the first in my family to attend college.
I am passionate about engineering and hope to become the project manager of an engineering team. Throughout high school, I was involved in many construction and technology based group projects. I enjoy working in teams and using my resourcefulness and practicality to solve problems. In addition to my interest in engineering, in my spare time I volunteer with New York Cares to help support those who are less fortunate. In order to grow and develop as a community we must invest time in our community rather than merely ourselves.
I believe it is with the same spirit that American Needs You practices its mission of investing first-generation college students. The ANY Fellows Program will provide me with intensive workshops, mentorship and opportunities to ensure my development, as an up and coming professional and help guide me to land a job in the field of engineering.
