The first question asked to establish an identity is, “What is your name?” but besides my name, Salma Akter, I have other aspects of identity that make me unique. I am devoted, sincere, determined, and optimistic. I am the girl who quickly dispels sadness, confronts ignorance, overcomes impediments, and dreams beyond her current limitations.
My father decided to move to America with hopes of a better life for each of his children. Although as a child I couldn’t fully appreciate the idea behind leaving one’s motherland and settling in a foreign country, I now understand the wisdom behind every move my father made. Here in the United States we are given abundant opportunities to shape our own lives and are provided with the tools to build a brighter future. Most importantly, higher education is not a distant dream but a reality that one can accomplish through determination, dedication and, inevitably hard work.
With all of these opportunities, I have learnt to dream endlessly. I aspire to be part of a field in which I can utilize my maximum potential to become a contributing factor to the New York community and the whole of humanity. NYNY will expose me to various career choices that will enrich my intellectual and personal experiences. Ultimately, I want to make a difference in my life as well as the lives of others to accomplish something positive and impactful.
