Shilanda

Shilanda

I am a returning adult student at Northeastern Illinois University. I am from the west side of Chicago and am the proud mother of a smart and lovely young lady named Kayla.

I currently work as a Parent Advocate and Site Coordinator for GEAR UP Alliance and the Beyond the Bell after school program.  I love working with my junior and senior students because they are an inspiration to me and a light of hope for this world.  I work with parents in helping them and guiding them through the high school years and college selection.  I have had the pleasure of working with this group of parents and students for the past three years.  My goal is to work with families of high school age children and help them discover what success looks like for them.

I am currently a Fellow with America Needs You, a member of Northeastern University’s Association of Student Social Workers, and a member of the Returning Adult Students Club.  My long term goal is to complete my Bachelor of Social Work and to receive my Masters in Counseling and continue working with high school students.

I would love to enhance and build my skills so that I can develop a meaningful career in social work and social services.  America Needs You will give me the foundation and lift that I feel I need to make it to the next level.  Being in a room of like-minded individuals and strong Mentor Coaches who have volunteered to make sure that I make it will lend itself to my success.
