I was born to Mexican parents in Yonkers, New York. I am currently a sophomore at Lehman College and my goal is to obtain a B.A in Political Science with a minor in Dance. Although these two fields seemingly do not correlate, they are both my passions and stepping stones to achieving my goals.
During my freshman year, I participated in a leadership program called Herbert H. Lehman Institute for Student Leadership. We learned ways to become better leaders and frequently engaged in group activities. I also actively participated in community service doing volunteer work that would allow me to experience different fields while expanding my network. The volunteer work has ranged from soup kitchens and event assistance, to making calendars for the elderly.
Dancing plays a major role in my life because it has allowed me to travel with a purpose. I am a member of Spirits N Motion 3.0, a salsa and Afro-Cuban team. This team has transformed me physically, mentally, and spiritually. The kind of transformation I have undergone is something I would one day like to bring to others.
My experiences have solidified my goals to establish a successful nonprofit organization, direct my own salsa team, and be a representative for the Hispanic community. I will continue to work towards this every single day. I believe America Needs You will allow me to reach my goals through mentoring, networking, and workshops. I am excited to continue to experience and see what I do with everything I learn along with the other 2014 New York Fellows.
