Suling

I was born in a small village in southern China. I lived with my grandparents until I was five years old, while my parents worked outside the village. Even though my family had limited resources, we loved each other very much. My parents have always taught me to be optimistic and hardworking, and they stressed the importance of becoming highly-educated. It has been 3 years since I moved to New York City with my parents, who didn’t understand English. However, as I grew up, I have used these challenges to motivate me to keep on moving forward.

My goals include contributing back to my community as much as I have received from it. Just two years ago I was an ESL student and now, with help from supportive teachers, I am capable of working in a school office. I received a tremendous amount of help while in New York, and I would like to use these opportunities to help other individuals like me. It is for that reason that I am exploring a career in social work and currently studying Human Services at BMCC, while looking to transfer to a four-year institution to further my education.

As a first-generation student, I value the resources and opportunities ANY provides for me to succeed. They show me their passion and professionalism to guide me to success during workshops. With the help of the amazing Mentor Coaches and the ANY family, I believe I can achieve my goals and contribute to our community.
