I am curently a sophomore at Lehman College working towards a degree in Nursing. My goal is to graduate in May of 2017 and become a registered nurse. My work and volunteer experience in healthcare has given me the opportunity to practice being responsible for the well-being of others – goals necessary for me as a future RN.
In 2013, I was part of the Inwood Houses’ Teen Choice Program, a program that trains young adults like me to help our peers reduce their risky health and sexual behaviors through health education. I also briefly volunteered at The Allen Pavilion Hospital in order to gain further insight into the nursing profession. As a volunteer, my responsibilities included providing a comfortable environment for patients, helping patients with meals, and translating possible concerns of the patients to the nurses. Additionally, I have been a caretaker for two elementary school students for the past two summers. Being the caretaker of such young and energetic youth helped me to further develop interpersonal skills such as patience, effective listening, and comprehension.
Through the New York Fellows Program, I hope to increase my professional skills as well as meet mentors and peers who are also driven to meet their career goals. I look forward to the experience I will gain through internships, expanding my knowledge, and developing a network of my own.
