Vilma

As long as I can remember, my father’s words have echoed in my head, warning me that I would have to work unrelentingly to survive unless I succeeded in my educational objectives. There is not a day that passes by without my father reminding me that nothing is impossible. This may sound like a cliché to many, however, when I look down at my father’s sturdy hands that work many hours a day, this phrase drives me to push through challenges, go beyond the status quo and strive for success.

Education is the solid foundation I was raised on. My grades and college goals were topics of importance from an early age. Like many, I am the first in my family to go to college; yet, this has not stopped me from dreaming and becoming even more ambitious.

Personal events led to my curiosity in health and the medical field. This passion inspired me to enroll as a full time student in Lehman College, where I am now pursuing a major in nursing. My ultimate goal is to become a pediatrician. As an America Needs You Fellow, I hope to become more informed, trained, and prepared so I can persevere in my journey to become a successful physician.
