Emigrating from Mexico, my parents nurtured me with their values of family, hard work, and commitment to education. It was hard adjusting to the new culture here in the United States, but there was something that my parents were absolutely sure of, and that was sending me to college. While earning my bachelor’s degree in Biology at DePaul University, I am also a student worker for the Community Outreach Office on campus. By working with the Community Outreach Office I am able to help students who are minorities and low-income reach for their goal of going to college.

I have noticed a problem that I see happening again and again with these students. Not all families can afford to live comfortably. I then related this back to my field of study. I wanted to do something in my career that would allow me to give families like those the possibility of treating disease without going into debt. And so, I am driven to pursue a career focused in Biotechnology. My interest has always been in coming up with alternatives to the expensive treatments that already exist, and my goal is to one day develop natural and affordable treatments for people with terminal illnesses.

As a motivated and resilient student, the ANY organization will fortify my leadership and academic goals to make a powerful contribution to the field of science and healthcare. With the help of my Mentor Coach, I will have the opportunity to achieve the academic, career, and personal goals that I have set. I am proud and honored to be an America Needs You Fellow!
