Yolanda

I was born in Coney Island located in Brooklyn, New York. I am currently a student at Kingsborough Community College majoring in Liberal Arts with a concentration in English. After graduating from Kingsborough, I plan to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a degree in Social Work.

Education has always been an important aspect of my life. I am also passionate about music, poetry, and the power of community service. Currently, I am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and recently became a Kaplan Leadership Scholar. I am Secretary of the Poetry and Creative Writing Club at Kingsborough, which allows me to improve my creative writing skills as well as help others do the same. I am also on the board of a non-profit organization in my neighborhood called Urban Neighborhood Services. It is through this organization that I have been able to work closely with the Coney Island Anti-Violence Collaborative, an organization established to help actively combat gun violence.

My experiences have helped me realize that I have the power to make a difference. As a part of the New York Fellows Program, I hope to discover a career path that allows me to continue doing what I love. I look forward to working with my Mentor Coach over the next two years as well as getting to know the other 2014 Fellows and the America Needs You staff. With ambition and self-determination, one day I will have a successful career where I am able to do all of the things that I love.
