Maia Almendral is the New Jersey Program Manager at America Needs You. Maia leads Fellow recruitment, provides academic and transfer advisement, and manages professional development grants and attendance. Program participants may connect with Maia for guidance regarding financial aid, scholarships or transfer.
Prior to joining the ANY team, Maia worked at iMentor where she provided personal and academic support to high school students and volunteer mentors. Working with a large number of recent immigrants, Maia took a particular interest in building mentor training resources and the curriculum to meet the unique needs and experiences of her students. Maia also has private sector experience working in architecture, but has always found ways to stay connected with students through volunteer opportunities.
Maia received her B.A.from the University of California, San Diego in 2010, majoring in Urban Studies & Planning and minoring in International Studies. During her time at UCSD, Maia contributed greatly to campus efforts to recruit and retain students of color by helping to found a high school outreach program that continues to serve students in South East San Diego. Additionally, Maia earned a certificate in College Access Counseling from Goddard-Riverside Options Institute. Maia is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and enjoys travel, writing, and dancing.
